Which historic residences should you visit in Monferrato?

The Gran Monferrato area is known as one of the most castle-rich parts of Italy, but that is only part of the story. The region is also home to a remarkable number of aristocratic residences, many of which still house precious works of art and are themselves treasures of historic architecture.

Here are a few suggestions, ranging from imposing hilltop castles to palaces that, over the centuries, became important cultural hubs and meeting places for intellectuals, as well as residences conceived as true works of art, between Valenza, Acqui Terme and the Casale Monferrato area.

Palazzo Gozzani Treville, in Casale Monferrato

Built from a 1711 design by architect Giovanni Battista Scapitta, this noble residence was created to impress. The theatrical layout of its entrance and its striking concave façade, rich in columns and stucco details, set the tone for lavish interiors that fully embody the complexity of the Rococo style.

Inside, visitors can admire fine frescoes by Francesco Guala, Giovanni Battista Natali and the Veronese painter Lorenzi, a pupil of Tiepolo.

Since 1827, Palazzo Gozzani Treville has been home to the Accademia Filarmonica of Casale Monferrato, one of Piedmont’s oldest and most prestigious music academies, whose members once even included Niccolò Paganini.

Today, the palace hosts concerts organised by the Philharmonic Academy, but it also offers gourmet experiences at Accademia Ristorante, an elegant and refined venue where guests can enjoy high-level cuisine.

  • Where it is: in the historic centre of Casale Monferrato
  • Why visit: one of the finest examples of aristocratic urban architecture in the city

Villa Ottolenghi Wedekind in Acqui Terme

At the top of Borgo Monterosso, one of the hills embracing Acqui Terme, lies one of the area’s most fascinating architectural treasures: Villa Ottolenghi Wedekind.

The residence was built in the first half of the twentieth century at the wish of Count Arturo Ottolenghi and his wife Herta von Wedekind zu Horst, a painter and sculptor fully recognised among the avant-garde figures of the 1900s.
Prominent names contributed to both the design and decoration of the villa, including architects such as Marcello Piacentini and artists of the calibre of Arturo Martini, Fortunato Depero and Venanzo Crocetti.

It is precisely this extraordinary dialogue between architecture and the visual arts that makes the villa truly one of a kind.
The residence is surrounded by a garden of around 10,000 square metres, created according to a carefully designed scenic layout known as the “Earthly Paradise”: an original and unusual green space that is well worth admiring.

  • Where it is: in the hills near Acqui Terme, in a panoramic setting in the heart of Alto Monferrato
    • Why visit: for the architectural and artistic value of the estate, which combines villa, gardens and artist-designed features in a landscape of great charm
    • Experiences: cultural visit, panoramic walk, a day immersed in art and scenery

Among the historic residences of Piedmont, and especially of Monferrato, that should not be missed is Palazzo Terzano, located in the centre of Valenza.

From the time this noble residence was built in the eighteenth century, it has always been at the heart of the town’s cultural life. Nobles and artists gathered here, concerts were held here, and some of the most influential historical figures of the time passed through its rooms.

How and When to Visit Piedmont’s Historic Homes in Monferrato

As we have seen, some of the most fascinating historic residences in Monferrato and Piedmont have been partially converted into hospitality venues, where visitors can enjoy gourmet food and wine experiences or stay surrounded by the charm of art and history.

Other historic residences, however, are privately owned and therefore not always open to the public. Many of them are nevertheless part of associations and heritage networks that offer regular openings throughout the year.

One of these is ADSI, the Italian Historic Houses Association, which organises events, concerts and opening days for historic residences across Italy.

In Piedmont, the Castelli Aperti initiative makes it possible to check opening dates for castles, fortresses and historic residences, and to book visits directly online.
