The Monferrato region is renowned for its castles and is said to have the highest concentration of castles in Italy. Each of these historic fortresses has its own unique story to tell, along with mysteries and legends waiting to be uncovered.

Many castles in Monferrato also offer unforgettable experiences, ranging from wine and gastronomy to wellness and hospitality.

A castle can become a luxury relais, where you can stay for a weekend or longer, an elegant restaurant to taste refined interpretations of local cuisine, a spa for ultimate relaxation, or even a winery, where you can discover and sample the renowned wines of Monferrato.

Visitable Castles in Monferrato

Not all fortresses in the Monferrato area are open to the public year-round. Some have specific visiting schedules, while others open their gates only by reservation.

Before planning your visit, it’s always a good idea to check the calendar of the Castelli Aperti network, which includes participating castles across various provinces in Piedmont.

Staying in a Monferrato Castle

Monferrato is a perfect destination for fulfilling the dream of staying in a castle in Piedmont. Over recent years, many castles in the area have been adapted to welcome visitors, offering anyone the chance to spend a night like royalty.

While a castle is an obvious choice for couples seeking an unforgettable romantic night, it’s also a unique opportunity for anyone to end a day of exploration among the hills of Monferrato in style.

Castles in Gran Monferrato

Spread across the Gran Monferrato region—from Casale to Acqui Terme, Ovada, Gavi, and even Tortona—the area’s ancient castles are remarkably diverse.

Some rise with tall, crenelated towers reminiscent of fairy tales, while others resemble grand, aristocratic villas. These differences often hint at their era of construction, with some dating back over a thousand years, while others are relatively modern.

Castles of Basso Monferrato and Casalese

Many castles dominate the hilltop villages, while others stand isolated, often surrounded by vineyards. Some remain as ruins, like those in Sala Monferrato, while others survive only in historical memory, such as in Pontestura.

Even without entering, some castles can amaze with just their external appearance. Examples include:

  • Castello di Cereseto, with its Disney-like charm.
  • Castello di Villadeati, a striking structure spread across four terraced levels, featuring gardens, towers, arches, and galleries.

Castles of Alto Monferrato near Ovada and Acqui Terme

In Upper Monferrato, particularly around Acqui Terme and Ovada, a high concentration of castles showcases the area’s rich past.

With a bit of luck, this concentration can be admired from the ramparts of the Castello di Cremolino. At an altitude of 450 meters, it’s said that, on clear days, you can spot up to 14 other castles scattered throughout the surrounding landscape.

Some of these fortresses have been transformed into elegant event venues, such as the Castello di Trisobbio, while others have become romantic accommodations, like the Castello di Tagliolo Monferrato.

Castles in the Gavi and Tortona Areas

Even in less populated areas dominated by natural beauty, such as the Parco delle Capanne di Marcarolo or Val Curone, notable man-made landmarks are still present.

While fewer in number compared to other parts of Gran Monferrato, the castles nestled among vineyards of Cortese, Barbera, and Timorasso are nonetheless impressive. Highlights include:

  • The imposing and ancient Forte di Gavi, which never fails to amaze visitors.
  • The grand and majestic Castello di Piovera.

Each of these castles offers a glimpse into the history and charm that make Monferrato a truly magical destination.
