Valenza is the heart of jewellery-making in Piedmont, a border town separated from Lombardy by the Po River. Its charming old town, strong goldsmithing tradition, and cultural heritage make Valenza a “precious” stop on a journey to discover Monferrato.
A Bit of History: From Ancient Roots to Modern Times
Founded by the Ligurians as a strategic outpost, Valenza evolved over the centuries, becoming an important centre during Roman times. It was conquered by the Visconti Family in 1370 and then passed through various rulers, including the Spanish and the French until it eventually became part of the Savoy territories. Valenza’s history is full of events that have shaped its distinctive and resilient character.
The Ancient Walls of Valenza
In the lower part of the town, you’ll find one of the primary historical traces of Valenza’s glorious past: the ancient defensive walls, or at least part of them.
The first set of walls was built during the Roman era to protect the city, but nothing remains of them today. The current walls, which highlight Valenza’s strategic role, date back to the 17th century. However, parts were dismantled under Napoleon’s orders to be used as building materials.
The Old Town: A Journey Through Art and Faith
Walking through Valenza feels like leafing through the pages of an old book. You can find churches and buildings of great historical significance, notably the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Not far from the cathedral is the Oratory of San Bartolomeo, the oldest church in the city, and the charming Church of Sant’Eusebio in Monte Valenza, set in a harmonious natural setting.
Other notable sites include Palazzo Pellizzari on Via Pellizzari, built in 1834 and now housing the town hall; Palazzo Valentino in Piazza Martiri, now the Municipal Cultural Center and Library of Valenza; and Villa del Pero, a splendid example of 18th-century architecture.
Valenza and the Art of Goldsmithing
Valenza is famous for its Diffused Goldsmithing Museum, or MOD. This project tells the story of jewellery-making through both physical and virtual tours. The journey starts at the San Domenico Complex, where a historical workshop recreates the atmosphere of early 20th-century Valenza. Here, you can fully appreciate the bond between the town and the precious goldsmithing craft, which is a true highlight of local culture today.
On May 16, 2024, during the opening of the Valenza Jewelry Week, the Valenza Goldsmithing Art Exhibition Center was inaugurated in the former San Domenico convent on Via IX Febbraio. This opening is the first step towards creating the Valenza Goldsmithing Art Museum.
Nature and Relaxation: Between the Po River Park and Monte Valenza Spa
Valenza is also about nature: along the Po River lies the Garzaia di Valenza, a protected area rich in river flora and home to colonies of red herons. It’s an ideal choice for nature lovers looking to explore all the facets of Monferrato.
Finally, a visit to the Monte Valenza Spa is a must for those seeking a moment of relaxation and fun, especially in summer. The spa features a water park surrounded by greenery, a camping area, a hotel, a restaurant, and even a small zoo.
